SUNDAY RESPITE

The Sunday Family Center Respite Program offers a unique blend of respite and recreational services to families who have a child who is developmentally disabled.  The program offers parents some necessary respite as well as offering their child with a disability an opportunity for an enjoyable day of socialization.

Frequently Asked Questions

Children must be deemed eligible by the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) and access services through Family Support Services or HCBS Medicaid Waiver. If your child does not have eligibility, or if you are unsure , please contact our office to discuss.

Children from 3 to 10 years of age are placed in age-appropriate groups. Each  group  stays  together  during the day and participates in a  series of  planned activities – games, music, arts and crafts, computers and sports.

The Family Center Sunday Respite Program meets for 18 Sundays from September to June.  The program is in operation from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM.  We have a nurse on staff all day. Children bring their own lunch and snack. We are a peanut free environment.

Nassau and Suffolk residents who have a child who is OPWDD eligible.

The Family Center offers a unique blend of respite and recreational services to families who have a child who is developmentally disabled.

This program offers parents some necessary respite during school vacations and over the summer for children who are OPWDD eligible, are accessing services through Family Support Services, and have behavior challenges.

The Vacation Respite and Recreation Program is committed to the following results: 

  • Respite opportunities for families 
  • Opportunities for children with disabilities with behavior challenges to practice social skills needed to participate in community, family and school settings
  • Decreased isolation of children with disabilities with behavior challenges

The Family Center Vacation Respite & Recreation Program will consist of five (5) sessions per calendar year during school vacations and over the summer.

The program is in operation from 10 AM to 2 PM. All sessions will be scheduled on weekdays during the school breaks. A calendar of dates will be available by the 1st of the year. Each session of the vacation program will be enrolled separately and independently so families can choose all 5 or fewer, as per their needs.

Children bring their own lunch. Snack is provided in the afternoon.

Program costs are covered by a grant for Nassau and Suffolk County residents. Therefore, children with a developmental disability are eligible at no cost to families. Families will complete applications and select the dates that they are interested in attending. 

  • All supervisory staff are trained to use nonviolent crisis intervention (CPI) to ensure the care, welfare, safety and security of all children 
  • Nurse on Staff all day 
  • Peanut-Free Environment
