Dedication of Evaluation Suite in Memory of Alan Stearn

On November 22, 2023, the VCLC Board of Trustees and Administration dedicated Variety’s newly renovated Evaluation Suite in memory of Alan Stearn, a member of the Board of Trustees and an alumni parent.

Alan Stearn was an exceptional individual who was dedicated to his family as well as to Variety Child Learning Center.  As an alumni parent, he was passionate about identifying young children with or at risk for disabilities as early as possible to intervene and provide them with the opportunity to learn, communicate and socialize.  It is very fitting that the Evaluation Suite where evaluations to determine children’s qualifications for special education and related therapies was dedicated in his memory.

Judith Bloch, VCLC’s founder, invited Alan to join the Board of Trustees in 1979.  He was the first alumni parent to become a member of the Board and served on the Board for 38 years until his passing in 2017.  Alan was elected Treasurer of the Board until he became Vice-Chairperson.

Alan took his responsibility as Board member seriously and worked on the acquisition of the Syosset building.  He was always supportive of the administration’s projects to expand and was part of the team to negotiate the lease for the  Gallow School in the Island Trees School District.

Alan also wanted to be a part of the school program and became a reader.  He came to school once a week to read to the children.  The children looked forward to him reading to them and nicknamed him “Grandpa Alan!
